MP says we should support science if it can help people
Today in the House of Commons, MPs will vote on whether to allow mitochondrial donation – a medical technique which involves combining the DNA of three people to prevent a genetic disease being passed on from mother to child. Defective mitochondria, which lie within every cell and supply it with energy, can lead to brain damage, heart failure, blindness and muscle wasting.
John said,
“I support mitochondrial donation because it has the potential to make peoples’ lives better. If science can prevent illness, then it should have our backing. I have confidence in this country’s ethical safeguards.”
