MP says an authoritative report is all-important
Yesterday, John Baron MP questioned Sir John Chilcot over the much-delayed report of the Iraq Inquiry into the 2003 invasion and its aftermath. Sir John appeared before the Foreign Affairs Select Committee following recent announcements that the report would not be published in time for the General Election, and that there may be further delays.
John’s questions and Sir John’s answers are available online at: http://data.parliament.uk/writtenevidence/committeeevidence.svc/evidencedocument/foreign-affairs-committee/progress-of-the-iraq-inquiry/oral/17950.html.
Afterwards, John said,
“It is deeply frustrating that 12 years after the invasion of Iraq, and over five years since the Inquiry was established, we are still awaiting publication. However, what is all important is that the report is authoritative, which is essential if we are to learn the lessons from this sad affair.”
“We should not underestimate the scope and breadth of the inquiry. Sir John is an honourable man who is doing a difficult job, and I believe the delay has not always been the inquiry’s fault. Having voted against the war, and bearing in mind those who have been affected by the conflict, I certainly look forward to reading the report once completed.”
