MP says rule changes must be consistent
Yesterday in the House of Commons, MPs voted on a Labour motion to ban MPs from holding paid directorships or consultancies from the start of the next Parliament. John does not hold a directorship or consultancy, but opposed the motion as it lacked consistency.
John said,
“The vast majority of MPs come into Parliament because they believe in public service. I consider it a great honour to be elected as an MP, and have always represented my constituents, both locally and nationally, as best I can.”
“Labour’s motion did not address the wider issue of second jobs. Banning directorships and consultancies would still allow someone to work as a trade union official, but could stop someone helping to run a family business. If the rules are to change, they must be consistent.”
“The existing rules clearly ban paid advocacy in any proceedings of Parliament. MPs should always behave with integrity and probity. All outside interests must be declared transparently in the register of Members’ Financial Interests. Any MP who breaks these rules should be punished and stand down.”
