MP says we should commit to at least 2% of GDP

On Thursday John Baron MP will lead a Parliamentary debate on a motion calling for the Government to spend at least 2% of GDP on defence, in line with its NATO commitment. The debate was secured with cross-party support via the Back Bench Business Committee, and around 35 MPs have so far signed the motion.

In the debate, John will say,

“At a time when countries not necessarily friendly to the West are increasing their defence spending and becoming more assertive, we need to rediscover the political will for strong defence. That the Americans feel the need to make their concerns known so close to an election at our loss of capability and manpower should be cause for concern.”

“Well-resourced and capable Armed Forces give the Government more foreign policy options and send a clear message to friends and potential adversaries alike, which can help avoid conflict later on. An under-resourced and less capable military sends the opposite message.”

“At the very least, the Government should fulfil its NATO commitment of spending 2% of GDP on defence. Having implored fellow NATO members to reach this level at last year’s NATO summit, falling below this level ourselves would be a grave mistake.”

“We need clarity from all the main parties as to their defence spending plans – the manifestos have not yet been printed. The adage that defence of the realm is the first duty of government is forged from events. We ignore history at our peril.”
