MP is sorry PM’s diary is full

Today the Prime Minister gave a Statement in the House of Commons, following the announcement yesterday of the agreement with the President of the European Council. At PMQs on 20th January, John asked that the Prime Minister respond to his letter signed by 40 Colleagues for a meeting about Parliamentary sovereignty and the EU renegotiations. The Prime Minister’s response was that he did not want to take up too much John’s time.

In the House of Commons, John asked,

“Following the Prime Minister’s response to my last PMQ, I have taken his advice and cleared my diary for a debate tomorrow on Parliamentary sovereignty. Given the importance of sovereignty to the EU renegotiations, will the Prime Minister join us and respond on behalf of the Government?”

The Prime Minister responded that he was unfortunately occupied with an international conference on Syria tomorrow, but would meet John to discuss the issue of sovereignty.

John said afterwards,

“I was sorry to hear the Prime Minister’s diary is full! However, persistence does have a value of its own in this place. I am pleased we shall soon have a meeting.”

“The issue of Parliamentary sovereignty goes to the heart of our relationship with the EU, whether it is control of our borders or the primacy of our laws. If Britain by itself can not stop unwanted EU taxes and regulation, then a vote to stay in is a vote to stay on the conveyor belt towards ever closer union.”
