MP says Government must conduct a fair referendum

During Foreign and Commonwealth Office questions in the Commons this afternoon, John Baron MP responded to the Minister for Europe, Rt Hon David Lidington MP, when he stated that those advocating ‘Brexit’ could not come up with an idea of how it would affect our trading relationship. John also cautioned the Minister that the Government must be seen to conduct a fair referendum, lest people question the result.

John said,

“The Minister maintains we can not say what our position post-Brexit would look like. However, were Britain to leave, we would have a healthy trading relationship with the EU, as many other countries outside the organisation already enjoy.”

“Furthermore, the Government must recognise the more it interferes in the referendum, the more it risks creating an unfair vote. Spending £9 million on a ‘remain’ propaganda leaflet does little to dispel this notion.”
