John Baron MP recently hosted national charity Bowel Cancer UK’s “Drop In” parliamentary event at Portcullis House, Westminster. The event was an opportunity for MPs to get detailed information on bowel cancer relating to their particular constituency and was presented to them in the form of a Constituency Toolkit.

829 people are diagnosed with bowel cancer and 355 die every year in Essex Cancer Network. Based on the constituency population of 205,256, it is estimated that around 123 of these incidences and 53 of these deaths will have been within John Baron’s Basildon and Billericay constituency.

John Baron said:

“It was a pleasure to host Bowel Cancer UK’s event, to meet their team and find out more about the impact of the disease in my constituency and across the UK as a whole. “

“Over 90% of bowel cancer patients will survive the disease for more than five years if diagnosed at the earliest stage. Improving early diagnosis is critical, therefore, if deaths from bowel cancer are to be reduced.”

Deborah Alsina, Chief Executive of Bowel Cancer UK said:

“We are delighted that John Baron hosted our event. His support is invaluable to Bowel Cancer UK not only as a bowel cancer champion but in his capacity as Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Cancer.

“Armed with the information in their Toolkits, we hope that the MPs who attended our event will champion bowel cancer on our behalf and help us to keep the disease on the political agenda in the future.”
