MP says EU’s democratic deficit unacceptable

The President of the European Commission, Jean-Claude Juncker, has criticised European leaders for reflecting their electorates’ views, saying they should act as ‘full-time Europeans’ and that ‘too many politicians are listening exclusively to their national opinion’. Last February, Mr Juncker also stated that ‘there can be no democratic choice against the European treaties’. As President of the European Commission, like all EU Commissioners, Mr Juncker is unelected.

John said,

“Though it claims to be democratic, it is clear the EU’s highest echelons have a contempt for democracy. Whilst Mr Juncker and his EU Commissioners are not troubled by public elections, in Britain we are enjoying a festival of democracy with our historic in/out EU referendum.”

“Only by voting to leave the EU will we wrest back control from unelected officials in Brussels, and ensure our all our laws are made by elected MPs at Westminster.”
