MP presses Foreign Secretary over trade opportunities

During Foreign and Commonwealth Office questions in the House of Commons this morning, John asked,

“Is the Foreign Secretary heartened by the fact that, since we voted to leave the EU, a number of key countries and economies, including India, China and Australia, have already approached the UK about furthering trade; and how well this compares with the stalled trade talks which have taken many years between the EU and such countries as Canada and the US?”

The Foreign Secretary acknowledged that the UK had been approached by a number of very major economies with a view to instigating trade talks, and agreed that it is much easier for such talks to be progressed between two countries than it is between the EU, with its 28 component parts, and another country.

John said afterwards,

“Following the referendum result, we are all leavers now. ‘Generation Gloom’ must retire to the sidelines so that we best capitalise on the many opportunities that will result from us leaving the EU. Trade deals with the faster-growing parts of the global economy is just one of them.”
