Today in the House of Commons, the Prime Minister made a statement about the European Council meeting at which budgets were proposed for next year. In a vote last month in the House of Commons, John voted to reduce our EU contributions but was defeated 252 to 42 in favour of the Government.
John asked:
“At a time of belt tightening for the country, does the Prime Minister think the time is right for the EU’s accounts to be fully and independently audited in order to help reduce waste and fraud?”
The Prime Minister responded by saying that it was a good point and that transparency was needed, but did not say he would push for the accounts to be audited.
John said afterwards:
“When many government departments face massive cuts, it is wrong that we are increasing our EU contribution. This only proves that the EU bureaucrats live in another world. Proper scrutiny of the EU’s accounts, which have not been audited for over a decade, would bring these people back to Earth.”
John,
I was very pleased to see that you voted against the Government on this. However I was disappointed that your name did not appear on the list of those voting against the approval of a variety of documents on EU Economic Governance yesterday. I can only conclude that you voted for this country to be ensnared further into the EU web.
