MP says no need for Article 50 vote

Today in the House of Commons, Labour is using its Opposition Day debate to push for greater Parliamentary scrutiny over Britain’s exit from the European Union, but in its motion has stopped short of calling for a vote on Article 50. The Government has accepted the Labour motion, but has added that scrutiny by Parliament must not undermine the Government’s negotiating position.

John said,

“‘Remoaners’ must not be allowed to overturn the clearly-expressed will of the British people to leave the European Union. There is no need for a further Parliamentary vote before the Government declares Article 50 – there is no question that we are exiting the EU, and procedure must not be used to frustrate this.”

“Parliament will have many opportunities to question and scrutinise the Government on Brexit in the coming months and years. However, a running commentary, as some are calling for, will only undermine Britain’s negotiating position. This is not in our interests.”
