MP says international community must learn from mistakes

Today in the House of Commons, during a Statement given by the Secretary of State for International Development, Rt Hon Priti Patel MP, John Baron MP asked,

“The Government has previously acknowledged that the cutting of the food coupon system in the summer of 2013 in the Syrian refugee camps in large part led to the large-scale migration thereafter. Britain has a proud record on humanitarian relief, but does the Secretary of State agree that the international community must learn from past mistakes when helping the people of Mosul?”

The Secretary of State replied that she agreed.

John said afterwards,

“Britain has an excellent record when it comes to supporting Syrian refugees – we are second only to the United States in terms of the amount of aid money donated. However, as it goes about supporting the people of Mosul following their liberation from Daesh, the international community must learn from its previous mistakes and ensure refugees are properly supported.”
