MP encourages residents to make submissions

Today the Minister for Housing, Dominic Raab MP, launched the consultation into the effectiveness of powers to prevent unauthorised encampments and developments. In particular, the consultation will consider Police and Council powers, court processes, Government guidance, the provision of legal traveller sites and their impact on settled communities. The consultation is now open [details below].

John said,

“Whilst the majority of travellers in our area have good relations with the local community, it is unfortunate that a small minority consider themselves above the law. In too many cases damage has been caused to local amenities, seemingly with impunity, and residents are understandably frustrated and distressed.”

“I am glad the consultation will be considering all aspects of this issue, including whether to follow the example of the Irish Government and tighten up trespass laws. I will be submitting to the consultation, and encourage residents to do so too.”

Notes to Editors:

• The consultation is now open until 15th June, and details of how to make submissions can be found at: https://www.gov.uk/government/consultations/powers-for-dealing-with-unauthorised-development-and-encampments.
