MP votes for Brexit amendment

Last night in the House of Commons, Amendment (N) tabled by Sir Graham Brady was passed by 317 votes to 301. John Baron MP voted for the amendment, having withdrawn all of his amendments (K, L & M) yesterday morning in order to increase the chances of the Speaker selecting Sir Graham’s amendment for debate.

John said,

“Parliament has sent a strong message to the EU that the backstop, as currently drafted in the Withdrawal Agreement, is unacceptable. Introducing internal trade barriers within the United Kingdom via a potentially indefinite backstop was never going to pass the House of Commons, and I am pleased the Government recognised this and also got behind the amendment.”

“It’s now over to the EU to work with the Prime Minister to find a mutually acceptable solution. Given the EU’s muddle on the backstop last week, there is clearly scope for this due to the EU’s wish to avoid ‘no deal’. I am sure electorates on the continent would not be forgiving if their national leaders failed to find a solution.”
