MP: confirmation of Government policy is welcome

Today in the House of Commons, John Baron MP questioned the Secretary of State for Exiting the EU, Rt Hon Stephen Barclay MP.

John asked,

“For clarity, in encouraging the Government to keep its nerve, and whilst most of us believe a good deal is preferable to no deal, will the Secretary of State confirm it is Government policy that, should a deal not be forthcoming, perhaps because of EU intransigence, we will be leaving on 29th March on no deal/WTO terms?”

The Secretary of State was unequivocal in stating that this was the case.

John said afterwards,

“It is good that the Government has confirmed the policy which unites the majority of its party. We hope to achieve a good deal, and support the Prime Minister in her endeavours and therefore the motion today. Taking ‘no deal’ off the table makes a bad deal more likely.”

“However, I have no doubt that this country would prosper if we left on WTO terms – terms by which we trade very profitably with the rest of the world outside the EU.”
