John Baron MP presses Prime Minister on ‘no deal’ exit

MP: Prime Minister should acknowledge MPs have expressed a view in law

Today in the House of Commons, the Prime Minister gave a Statement following last week’s meeting of the European Council.

In the Chamber, John said,

“In law, this House of Commons has expressed a view to leave the EU on 29th March, with or without a deal. We have been constantly reassured by Ministers that we are prepared for no deal, including in response to my Urgent Question last week. I therefore urge her to face down this remain-dominated Westminster bubble, and throw her Government’s weight behind leaving on no deal / WTO terms, thereby honouring the referendum result, the triggering of Article 50 and our manifesto pledge.”

In response, the Prime Minister suggested she too wanted to leave the EU, preferably with a deal.

John said afterwards,

“We are constantly being told that Parliament has not expressed its view, yet in law it has by a substantial majority. Even at this eleventh hour, and regardless of whether she won or lost, she could side with the referendum result and honour her own commitment to leave as soon as possible, without a deal if necessary. This is crunch time. Her legacy will be influenced by this decision.”
