MP says Parliament must respect referendum

This week Parliament returns from its summer recess. MPs opposed to leaving the EU on 31st October without an agreement, together with the Speaker, will attempt to legislate against such a move, while the Prime Minister has announced that Parliament will be prorogued next week, pending a Queen’s Speech on 14th October.

John said,

“Parliament must respect the outcome of the 2016 referendum to leave the EU. Our departure date has already been put back three times, and a fourth time would add further insult to the over 17 million people who voted to leave the EU as well as prolong business uncertainty.”

“Moreover, anyone who has ever conducted a business negotiation knows that being unable to walk away from a deal is the quickest way of securing a bad one. Ruling out ‘no deal’ makes a good deal much less likely, and I hope my colleagues will bear this in mind when they vote this week.”

“Most of the remain MPs hoping to block no deal themselves voted to trigger Article 50 in February 2017, by a huge majority – agreeing to leave the EU on 29th March 2019, with or without a deal. Which bit of this do they not now understand? After three years of debating Brexit and negotiations, the time has come to action what they voted for.”

“All MPs now need to get behind the Prime Minister as he seeks a deal with the EU which stands a good chance of making it through the House of Commons. If the EU does not compromise, then we need to leave with no deal on 31st October. The Prime Minister has my full support.”
