MP supports Government in General Election vote

Yesterday in the House of Commons, John Baron MP opposed and voted against measures to rule out a no deal / WTO Brexit on 31st October, as this undermines the Government’s negotiating position as it seeks to find a good deal. He also supported the Prime Minister’s motion for an early General Election, which fell short of the required two-thirds majority as Labour MPs abstained.

In the Chamber, John said,

“It is an inconvenient truth for many in this Chamber that the overwhelming majority of Members here tonight voted to trigger Article 50. What it said, very simply, was that we would leave the EU by 29th March, with or without a deal. Yet we have now seen two extensions to that deadline, and to many outside this place that is evident proof that there are too many remain MPs who will clasp on to any passing straw in order to delay and frustrate the EU referendum result. That is very wrong indeed. Not only does it make for a lack of trust, but it reinforces a scepticism in our politics that is not healthy at all.”

“It said that we would leave with or without a deal. Too many Members have continued to kick the can down the road – not once, not twice, but now three times, courtesy of the Bill passed earlier. It is absolutely ridiculous, and people are utterly fed up with it. A lot of remain MPs must look at themselves in the mirror and own up to the fact that all they want to do is stop Brexit. The people out there have had enough.”

John said afterwards,

“Remain MPs in the House of Commons can not keep claiming they support Brexit whilst repeatedly voting for delay after delay – the present legislation being only the latest example. The vast majority of MPs voted to trigger Article 50, which sets out in black and white that the departing country leaves after two years, whether they have a deal or not. It is high time for Parliament to respect Brexit.”

“A General Election is now necessary to elect a fresh Parliament, and hopefully one which will get behind Boris Johnson as Prime Minister and enable him to close a good deal with the EU if possible, or leave on 31st October if not. Opposition parties should stop playing political parlour games and support the early General Election they have spent the last many months calling for.”

“It is ridiculous that those MPs accusing the Government of mounting a ‘coup’ are now standing in the way of its moves to call a General Election and consult the people. I am confident voters will see through this.”
