MP meets with Shelley and Fraser Simmonds at Westminster
John Baron MP recently met with Shelley and Fraser Simmonds in Parliament to present them with their Points of Light Award. Points of Light is a daily award issued by the Prime Minister for outstanding voluntary work, and Shelley and Fraser were awarded as the UK’s 1266th and 1267th Points of Light in recognition of the huge amount of work that they do for Action Duchenne. Action Duchenne is a charity that is dedicated to supporting those, like Fraser, who have??Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy – a condition that affects around 2,500 people in the UK, with the vast majority being male. Mutations, or changes, in the dystrophin gene stop the body making a vital muscle protein and over time this causes muscles to weaken and waste away. The condition reduces life expectancy to an average of approximately 30 years and it has no cure.?

“It was great to meet with Shelley, Fraser and their family at Parliament and I was pleased to be able to present them with their Points of Light award. Shelley and Fraser do a huge amount to raise funds and awareness for Action Duchenne and it pleasing to see that the Prime Minister has recognised this effort with this award.”

“I am so proud of my little boy for being awarded such prestigious recognition from the Prime Minister – thank you. Fraser has taught me more about life in his six years than what I learned in all of the thirty before I had him and this has driven me to make the world a better place for him. I’m determined to see a society that will one day be fully inclusive, accessible and equal for those with a disability – because different doesn’t mean less. My son may have Duchenne muscular dystrophy, but it doesn’t stop him from being happy with a life full of hopes and dreams ahead of him.”
