MP says every reason for a UK-EU trade deal by December 2020
Today in the House of Commons, during the debate on the Second Reading of the European Union (Withdrawal Agreement) Bill – which will implement the deal taking us out of the EU – John asked Rt Hon Liam Fox MP,
“Given Australia negotiated free trade deals with Japan, China and South Korea all within 18 months, does he agree there is every reason the UK should be able to agree a trade deal with the EU by the end of 2020 after 47 years of integration, provided there is goodwill on the EU’s side?”
Rt Hon Liam Fox MP said John had hit the nail on the head.
Afterwards, John said,
“The Australian example shows it is possible to move rapidly on trade deals if there is the goodwill to do so. Moreover, the proposed UK-EU trade deal is very different from almost all other trade deals, inasmuch as both sides start negotiations with zero barriers rather than negotiating to strike them down. These negotiations will therefore be political rather than technical, which should allow for even faster progress.”
