MP: UK will be open to the whole world, not just the EU

The Home Secretary, Rt Hon Priti Patel MP, has formally announced the Government’s new post-Brexit immigration system. Taking effect from 1st January 2021, this will assign points for specific skills, qualifications or salaries, and visas will only be awarded to those gaining enough points. The system will treat EU and non-EU citizens equally.

John said,

“I welcome these new proposals, especially as they will ensure Britain’s immigration system treats all citizens equally, whether or not they come from the European Union. Priority will be given to those with the highest skills, qualifications and talent, ensuring that the world’s brightest and best will be able to live and work in the UK.”

“As a member of the EU, we were pursuing an immigration policy which discriminated against the rest of the world outside the EU. This was never right.”

Notes to Editors:

• EU Citizens and other non-visa nationals will not require a visa to enter the UK when visiting for up to six months.

• EU citizens resident in the UK by 31st December 2020 can still apply to settle in the UK through the EU Settlement Scheme.
