MP: We have regained control of trade policy
Yesterday US and British officials launched free trade agreement negotiations. The current round, conducted via video conference due to the coronavirus outbreak, will continue for a fortnight. Analysis suggests that this free trade agreement could lead to a £15 billion increase in trade, benefitting every region and nation in the UK. A key aim in the talks will be to reduce the £493 million worth of tariffs levied on UK exports to the US each year. However, there will be no compromises on environmental protection, animal welfare and food standards, and the NHS will not be ‘up for sale’.
John said,
“Now we have left the European Union, we have regained control of our international trade policy and have the ability to negotiate our own free trade agreements with countries outside the EU, which has a woeful track record at negotiating these deals. A US-UK free trade agreement will be greatly to the mutual benefit of both countries, and I welcome the opening of these talks and wish the negotiators well.”
