MP: Labour is coming to terms with life outside the EU
Earlier this week the new Labour Leader, Rt Hon Sir Keir Starmer MP, opted not to join other opposition parties, including the Liberal Democrats and the SNP, in calling for an extension to the Transition Period, which is due to expire at the end of the year.
John said,
“As Jeremy Corbyn’s Shadow Brexit Secretary, Sir Keir was a powerful remain voice who pushed Labour into its anti-Brexit second referendum policy which was totally rejected by voters in December’s General Election. It is therefore heartening that he has changed his stance and that Labour under his leadership is coming to terms with leaving the EU.”
“However, the Government should not be complacent. Sir Keir clearly wishes to give the Government the opportunity of proving itself up to the task of arranging a trade agreement by December, but judges that this will not happen. In this he is wrong – striking an agreement within this timeframe is entirely possible, especially if the EU starts treating the UK like any other independent country, but the Government should strain every sinew to complete the negotiations in good time.”
