John Baron MP welcomes Government support to protect places of worship

MP encourages local places of worship to apply

The Government is providing £3.2 million towards the Places of Worship Protective Security Fund, which exists to improve security at places of worship at risk from hate crime attacks. The Fund is now open for its latest round of applications, and offers help to churches, mosques, gurdwaras, temples and associated faith community centres to install physical security. This can include more secure gates, locks, alarms and CCTV in order to deter and prevent hate crime attacks.

John said,

“Everyone in Britain has the right to worship without the fear of attack or discrimination. If any place of worship feels at risk from hate crimes or attacks, I would encourage people to apply for this funding to help improve security measures.”

• Since its introduction the Places of Worship Protective Security Fund has awarded more than 180 grants helping 76 churches, 75 mosques, 23 gurdwaras and nine Hindu temples.

• Applications close on 9th August.

• The Jewish community is not eligible for funding through this Fund because a separate commitment was made to fund security measures at community sites through a grant administered by the Community Security Trust (https://cst.org.uk/).

• If people are having difficulty obtaining essential supplies, they can register with Essex Coronavirus Action, which is a collaboration between Essex County Council, the Essex Public Health Team and local groups. Their number is 0300 303 9988, open from 8.00am – 8.00pm, seven days a week.
