MP says concession must be restored

Having raised this issue with the Prime Minister, Chief Whip and Culture Secretary over the summer, John Baron MP has written to the new Director General of the BBC, Tim Davie, to ask for the restoration of free TV licenses to over-75s. The BBC agreed to take responsibility from the Government for this concession, and in return was allowed to close the ‘iplayer loophole’ and raise the licence fee in line with inflation.

John said,

“It is disappointing and unacceptable that the BBC has chosen to end free TV licenses for our senior citizens, bringing to a close a concession which has been in place for nearly two decades. The BBC was allowed to raise the licence fee and close the iplayer loophole, and its side of the bargain was to take responsibility for this concession. It is important that it restores it as soon as possible.”

“I look forward to my meeting with the Minister of State regarding this issue.”
