MP says this legislation does not break international law

Today John Baron MP will vote for the remaining stages of the Internal Market Bill as it passes through the House of Commons before going on to the House of Lords. The Bill is intended to ensure the UK internal market functions seamlessly after the end of the transition period, including trade between Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Following representations from back benchers, including John, the Government has tabled amendments to ensure the parts of the Bill which will allow the Government to override the Withdrawal Agreement, if this proves necessary, will only be triggered by a further Parliamentary vote.

John said,

“I continue to believe the European Union and Britain will agree a good trade deal before the end of the transition period, but there remain key areas of disagreement. The EU continues to insist that the UK sign up to forms of dynamic alignment with EU regulations which are not found in comparable trade agreements with other countries. This is unreasonable, and the EU must start treating Britain like any other independent country.”

“As someone who places great importance on the rule of law, I had misgivings about some of the measures within the Internal Market Bill. However, having made further enquiries with the Government, I am satisfied that the amendments ensuring that MPs will have a further vote before these powers in the legislation can be activated are sufficient.”

“I am therefore supporting the Internal Market Bill. A treaty is not broken by passing this legislation, but only when it is broken.”
