MP says EU should follow Norway’s example

Today the Government has signed a fisheries agreement with Norway, the UK’s first since leaving the EU and our first as an independent coastal state in 40 years. The Fisheries Framework Agreement means that Britain and Norway will hold annual negotiations on the issues of access to waters and fishing quotas. Each year, the British fishing fleet lands some £32 million worth of fish from Norwegian waters.

John said,

“This deal, which will hopefully be the first of many, is excellent news for our fisherman and fishing communities. As we leave the EU’s Common Fisheries Policy and resume our status as an independent maritime nation, our coastal communities will reap the benefits.”

“In our ongoing negotiations the EU would do well to follow the British and Norwegian example, and agree a fair and equitable settlement with the UK which recognises that the UK is once again an independent coastal state.”
