Cancer patients will now be treated like patients with long term conditions
In Health Questions today in the House of Commons, John Baron MP pressed the Government to ensure cancer patients were offered care plans to improve their understanding and experience of the treatment they received. Care plans are formulated with the patient, and map out the patient’s treatment and all the different forms of support that are available. All too often in the past cancer patients have complained that they did not understand everything that was happening to them during their care pathway.
John said:
“The Government has rightly announced in the Patient Choices Consultation document that all patients with long term conditions should be offered a care plan. May I encourage the Minister to ensure that this also applies to all cancer patients.”
The Minister answered that the consultation was ongoing but he could now give an assurance that cancer patients would be included.
John said afterwards:
“Cancer patients in the past have often felt left in the dark when it comes to understanding their treatment and what the future holds. This often causes anxiety. In future, care plans will ensure that patients are fully consulted and informed about their treatment and all forms of support.”
