John Baron MP welcomes an extra £7 million to boost local cycling and walking infrastructure

MP supports bike and pedestrian-friendly measures

As part of the Government’s £2 billion overall investment into cycling and walking, Essex is set to receive an additional £7,358,700 from the Active Travel Fund. This will be used to fund measures such as School Streets, Low Traffic Neighbourhoods and segregated cycle lanes. Schemes will have to be properly thought out, and their impact on other road users closely considered. Councils will have time to consult local communities, and if these conditions are not met, future funding allocations will be reduced and the Government could claw back some of the money already provided.

John said,

“The Government has pledged a revolution in walking and cycling as part of its plans to level up across the country and make our areas more bike and pedestrian-friendly. Many of us have seen a large increase in the number of people opting to walk or cycle during the coronavirus pandemic, and I therefore welcome this extra investment and trust it will be put to good use.”
