MP: Government will support councils

Since the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic, the Government has provided over £7.2 billion to support local authorities. In addition, the extension of the Contain Outbreak Management Fund, for those authorities under the highest level of restrictions is potentially worth over £200 million a month. All this combined, together with the additional resources in the Spending Review, will amount to over £10 billion of support this year. Core Spending Power is forecast to rise by 4.5% in cash terms, also opening up an additional £1 billion for social care, and annual settlement allocations are increasing with inflation. Amongst other measures, the £4 billion Levelling Up fund will be open to any local area, which will finance infrastructure and town centre regeneration, and the Shared Prosperity Fund will support ex-industrial areas, towns and rural and coastal communities.

John said,

“Local government is at the heart of our communities, and I welcome these substantial extra resources to support our local authorities. The Government will continue to ensure councils are able to respond to the unprecedented challenges of the pandemic.”
