Government responds to MP’s detailed proposals to cut Energy Bills

John Baron MP has today received confirmation from Ministers that the Government is reviewing John’s ideas as to the best way of providing customers with information on their energy supplier’s cheapest tariffs.

John wrote with detailed proposals suggesting how the information could be presented on each energy bill (see attached letter). The Government has said that the Department of Energy and Climate Change is currently working with energy suppliers on the details of his and other proposals, in the hope they can be implemented through a voluntary agreement. However, if not, the policy will be implemented through powers within the forthcoming Energy Bill.

John said:

“After a long campaign on this issue, it is good to hear the Government will, if necessary, force energy suppliers to disclose their cheapest tariffs on each energy bill so customers may benefit.”

“I am pressing the Government over the clearest way energy companies could present this information, given that customers are already bombarded with too much irrelevant detail.”

“4000 different Tariffs cause understandable confusion among consumers. Obliging energy companies to print cheapest tariff information on all energy bills will help to ensure consumers pay no more than they need to. This will help all households, but particularly the 4 million people who live in fuel poverty.”
