MP: Britain shares expertise with the world

Today the Secretary of State for Health & Social Care will announce that Britain’s expertise will be offered to other countries through the New Variant Assessment Platform, to help them identify new variants of covid-19. This will enable them to spot new changes in the virus and will provide an early warning system for new mutations that could endanger the UK. Britain has led the world in gene sequencing of the coronavirus, and has identified more than half of all the coronavirus strains worldwide since the pandemic began.

John said,

“I welcome this positive announcement, which will support the work of the World Health Organisation as we collectively confront the coronavirus pandemic. Sharing British laboratory capacity to spot new variants at an early stage helps us all, and should allow us to take timely steps to mitigate emerging challenges.”

“In addition to the Oxford vaccine, this is another clear example of Britain’s world-leading scientific expertise making a great contribution to global public health, and I commend the Government on the launch of this New Variant Assessment Platform.”
