MP disappointed amendments were not voted upon
Yesterday John Baron MP would have voted for a set of amendments (to which he had added his name) to the Fire Safety Bill which would have protected leaseholders from having to pay for the costs of remedial works to make their properties safe. However, there was insufficient time to consider the amendments and the votes did not take place. These remedial works include replacing dangerous cladding, but also insulation, wooden balcony fittings, fire doors and other costs. John and around 35 other Conservative MPs believe leaseholders should not have to cover these costs, as they were not responsible for them.
John said,
“It is disappointing that there was insufficient time for the votes to take place yesterday, as there would have been a strong show of support for them. Many MPs across the Commons firmly believe that leaseholders should not be landed with these fire safety costs, as they were not responsible for them.”
“The amendments will most likely return in the House of Lords, and if passed they will return to the House of Commons. I would urge the Government to get behind them, or table their own similar amendments, so we can help leaseholders who find themselves in these difficult and sometimes dangerous situations.”
