MP urges social media networks to take action

Following last night’s Euro 2020 football final, there has been racist abuse directed towards members of the England football team.

John said,

“The England team are the pride and toast of the nation, and they have lifted the country’s spirits during these difficult times. It is a great shame that we fell just short of winning the tournament, but all the players can hold their heads high at their achievements. A grateful nation salutes them.”

“It is deeply dispiriting to learn that some people are subjecting some non-white players to racist abuse. This is very wrong and must stop, and I would expect the full force of the law to be applied.”

“I also call upon the social media networks to play their part in ensuring that this unacceptable abuse is expunged from their sites. There is no room for racism online, in sport or in everyday life.”
