MP: More time needed to examine proposals

This evening the Government is holding a vote on the tax rises for the social care policy announced yesterday afternoon. The proposals are complex and far-reaching, and there is a lack of clarity about some important aspects of the reforms. Because he feels that more time is required to consider such important matters, John Baron MP is intending to abstain in this evening’s vote.

John said,

“The Prime Minister is right that reform of social care is pressing and essential. Governments over many decades, both Labour and Conservative, have ducked the difficult decisions, and a key plank of the 2017 and 2019 Conservative manifestos was an undertaking to fix the system.”

“The new plans are complex and contain far-reaching and significant tax reforms, the full implications of which are not clear only a day after they were first announced. I am seeking clarity from the Government, but in light of the lack of time to properly scrutinise the policy in advance I will be abstaining this evening.”
