MP: Sir David was the epitome of a constituency MP

If he had been called by Mr Speaker in yesterday’s tribute to Sir David Amess MP, John would have said,

“In addition to the many heartfelt tributes to David as a good friend and colleague, assiduous MP and devoted family man, I wish to offer a brief insight into his work as a constituency MP.”

“David offered me my first Parliamentary opportunity when he vacated the seat of Basildon in 1997. Throughout that campaign when meeting residents, it became very clear that for David no cause was too small, and no effort was too great, when it came to their concerns – he epitomised the best of what it is to be a constituency MP. It didn’t stop me losing the seat by the small margin of 13,000 votes, but it did set a standard to which over the years I have aspired to attain.”

“On behalf of my constituents, and all those who knew him, we send our condolences to his family and Parliamentary team.”
