MP welcomes forthcoming legislation
During Home Office Questions in the House of Commons on Monday, John Baron MP asked about illegal Channel crossings,
“I warmly welcome the Minister and the Government’s forthcoming legislation on this issue, but may I urge on him the utmost haste and speed in delivering it to this House for our consideration? The trade, as it were, of human trafficking is a hideous crime. Lives are being lost now. It is making a laughing stock of the two systems on both sides of the channel. We need to put a stop to it. It should not be beyond the wit of the Government to do so.”
The Minister, Tom Pursglove MP, said that he hoped the legislation would command the support of the Commons, and that the Government was collaborating closely with the French to address these crossings.
Afterwards, John said,
“I welcome the Minister’s response, and am also supportive of the forthcoming legislation which aims to destroy the people smugglers’ business model. However, both the French and British Governments must take all necessary steps to crack down on this illegal migration – it does not reflect well on either side, and voters on both sides of the Channel expect results.”
