MP: Now is not the time to change system
The Commons Committee on Standards found that Rt Hon Owen Paterson MP had breached Parliamentary rules, and recommended that he be suspended from Parliament for 30 sitting days. The House of Commons usually endorses these findings without a vote, but Rt Hon Andrea Leadsom MP tabled an amendment which will pause this process and establish a new system for investigating possible breaches of the rules and subsequently subjecting Mr Paterson’s case to them. John Baron MP abstained in the vote on the amendment.
John said,
“If the system needs reforming, now is not the time. MPs have had ample opportunity over the last decade to change it, and we have that opportunity in the future.”
“In line with usual practice, MPs should not be contending the findings of this Committee, and so I did not vote.”
