MP raises issue of foreign journalists made redundant

Today in the House of Commons, the Foreign Secretary answered questions following the announcement today of a significant restructuring in the BBC World Service.

John said:

“The BBC is rightly concerned about the fate of the foreign born journalists working in London who are going to be made redundant, and their plight should they return to certain countries which they may have criticised. Will the Foreign Secretary work with the BBC and take a sympathetic view on this issue?”

The Foreign Secretary promised to do this.

John said afterwards:

“We have a moral responsibility to do our best to ensure no harm comes to these journalists, given their service to the BBC World Service.”
