MP condemns all intimidation

Following the incident last night, which required the Leader of the Opposition, Sir Keir Starmer, and other senior Opposition figures to be moved to safety, John Baron MP said,

“What happened to the Leader of the Opposition last night was unacceptable, as is similar recent behaviour directed towards others including Ministers, journalists and officials such as Chris Whitty. In an open democracy such as ours people have the right to protest, but they do not have the right to intimidate or assault. If necessary, I hope those responsible for last night’s actions feel the full force of the law.”

“More broadly, it is important that as a society we rediscover the ability to disagree amicably, and without the tendency to assign the basest of motives to those who have a different opinion. Sir David Amess was a great example of this, as shown by the great affection in which he was held by people regardless of their political affiliation.”
