MP: Solutions must be sought to end conflict

To suggestions that Britain, along with its NATO partners, establish a no-fly zone over Ukraine to help reduce civilian casualties, John said,

“Notwithstanding the terrible acts of Russian aggression and our Article V undertakings to NATO, the Government must continue to resist the siren calls for direct military intervention including a no-fly zone over Ukraine. This would trigger a wider conflict, and lead to even more suffering. Instead, we must continue to supply humanitarian assistance and military materiel to our Ukrainian friends.”

“At the same time, the Government and international community should be working on solutions, including ‘off-ramps’, which can lead to an end state to this conflict which is acceptable to the Ukrainian Government, the international community and indeed the Russian Government. The more people that are killed on both sides, the harder this will be, so speed is of the essence.”
