MP: Legislation will help deter illegal entry to the UK while ensuring refugees are welcome

Yesterday evening, John Baron MP voted with the Government as the Nationality and Borders Bill passed through its latest Commons stages. The Bill reforms the immigration system to make it fairer and more effective for people genuinely claiming asylum, takes steps to deter illegal entry by breaking the business model of the smuggling gangs, and makes it easier to remove people from the UK who do not have the right to be here.

John said,

“The Nationality and Borders Bill implements some important reforms to improve the system for those genuinely claiming asylum whilst also deterring those who would try to enter the country illegally. Britain has a long and proud history of offering sanctuary for those fleeing violence and persecution, as we are rightly doing with refugees from Ukraine, and this must continue.”

“However, it is right that the Government takes steps to break the business model of the people smugglers, who often endanger people’s lives as they encourage them to make the dangerous journey across the Channel. In addition, no-one should be disadvantaged by playing by the rules and applying for asylum through the proper process.”
