MP raises suggestions with Chancellor

John Baron MP has written to the Chancellor of the Exchequer, Rt Hon Rishi Sunak MP, with his suggestions to help alleviate the cost of living. These include increases in the minimum wages, bringing forward the promised cut in income tax and increasing benefits payments. In order to raise money for the Government, John suggests cancelling HS2 and reducing the costs of quangos.

John said,

“The cost of living is the major challenge facing governments across the world. The Government has already taken some positive steps, but there is scope for all of society to pull together and share responsibility.”

“Increasing further both the minimum and living wages will put more money into the pockets of the lowest-paid, who are affected most by the increases in the cost of living. This will be a cost to industry, but the UK will remain a competitive place to do business, as we transition towards a high-wage, high-skill economy. I would also scrap the planned increases in corporation tax.”

“In turn, the Government should increase benefits payments to help those not in work, and bring forward the promised cut in income tax.”

“In order to raise money, I continue to suggest the Government should cancel HS2, which would save the Government in excess of £80 billion, and tackle the thicket of quangos, which is costing many billions.”

“I look forward to hearing back from the Chancellor in due course.”
