MP: there must be balance

Today in the   House of Commons during an Urgent Question on the recently announced redundancies within the Armed Forces, John Baron MP questioned the Right Honourable Liam Fox MP, Secretary of State for Defence about concerns within the Armed Forces about the balance between MOD personnel and troops on the front line.

John said:

“No one should doubt the Secretary of State’s commitment to the welfare of our Armed Forces. There is concern amongst frontline forces that the MOD itself is top heavy relative to troops on the ground. Can he remind us as to what measures he is taking to streamline the MOD in order to ensure we have got the right balance?”

The Secretary of State replied that the MOD was being downsized by 25,000 personnel, which is far more than redundancies on the front line, and that this would maintain the right balance.

John said afterwards:

“We must make sure that Armed Forces are properly balanced to meet the unforeseen contingencies which undoubtedly will surface. In the past, we have allowed too much bureaucracy to absorb too much of the defence budget.”
