MP highlights plight of teachers over allegations of assault
During Education Questions in the House of Commons yesterday, John Baron MP raised the issue of discipline in schools and specifically the plight of school staff when it comes to allegations of physical and sexual assault.
John said:
“About 70% of all allegations of physical and sexual assault are never proven yet, despite those accused being exonerated, the allegations are kept on file and they come up on Criminal Record Bureau checks. What is the Government going to do about this?”
Nick Gibb MP, Minister of State for Education, replied that false accusations against teachers can have a devastating effect on their careers. He made clear that the Government intends to introduce anonymity for such teachers and will announce more details in due course.
Speaking afterwards, John said:
“No child’s education should be disrupted by poor discipline in the classroom. Protecting teachers against false accusations of assault will help in combating disruptive pupils.”
