MP: we must be careful about ‘crowd-control’ arms sales

Today the Prime Minister made a Statement in the House of Commons on Libya and the Middle East. He highlighted the current situation, the steps Britain was taking to help its Nationals and touched upon political reform. John Baron MP took the opportunity to quiz him about our future policy across the region.

John said:

“The Government has been right to support the forces of democracy in Libya, Egypt and elsewhere but, further to his Statement, does he think this support will have any effect on future relationships with our other autocratic friends in the region?”

The Prime Minister replied by highlighting the fact that on his recent visit he had met with rulers who were prepared to embrace democratic change.

John said afterwards:

“We are seeing events which normally happen but once in a generation. This should influence our future dealings across the region. For example, we should stop selling crowd-control arms to such rulers.”
