MP advises caution

Today in the House of Commons in a Statement by the Prime Minister on the Middle East and North Africa, progress was outlined about the plans for a no-fly zone.

John asked:

“May I suggest a note of caution about a no-fly zone. Our record of intervention in this region is not good. Furthermore, a no-fly zone could require Gaddafi’s ground forces to be attacked and begs the question what happens if it fails.”

The Prime Minister responded that he felt the price of inaction would be far greater than that of action, and that such a no-fly zone has the support of Arab neighbours.

John said afterwards:

“Once again we propose to meddle in the internal affairs of another Muslim country. I hope Western Governments have thought long and hard about both the short and long term consequences of such action.
