MP: You can only preach democracy from the moral high ground

Today in the House of Commons, during a Statement on Libya, John Baron MP pressed the Foreign Secretary over events over the weekend.

John said:

“Apart from the irony of sending a warship named after a pork sausage to rescue Brits from a Muslim country, surely the lesson from this episode is that we should stop meddling and be very careful before we lecture countries about democracy when we have been supplying their autocratic leaders with crowd control weapons.”

The Foreign Secretary ducked the question.

John added afterwards:

“In 2008 Britain sold arms to 11 of the 15 countries identified by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute as places of major armed conflict. You can only preach democracy from the moral high ground.”
