MP welcomes jobs tax reversal and bureaucracy cuts

Today in the House of Commons, during an Urgent Question at which David Laws [Chief Secretary to the Treasury] was at the Dispatch Box answering questions about the Government’s plans to cut spending, John asked him to put on record the fundamental flaw in the Labour Party’s thinking.

John said:

“Perhaps the Chief Secretary will take this opportunity to correct a fundamental flaw in the Opposition’s thinking in believing that a cut in spending is taking money out of the economy, when in reality every pound that any Government borrows and spends comes from the private sector, and we need a strong private sector-led recovery to help reduce our deficit.”

The Chief Secretary agreed that this was the case.

John said afterwards:

“Without a private sector recovery, less money can be spent on public services and taxes will have to rise. This is why I welcome this Government’s reversal in Labour’s jobs tax and a reduction in wasteful bureaucracy, such as QUANGOs.”
