MP says veto should be start of a new relationship

Today in the House of Commons during the Prime Minister’s Statement on the EU Summit, John Baron MP welcomed the veto but also quizzed the Prime Minister as to what he sees our relationship to be with the EU in future.

John said:

“The Prime Minister’s veto has rightly struck a chord with the country. I suggest this veto should not be the end of the matter but the beginning of a process to recalibrate our relationship with the EU based on free trade and growth, and not political union and regulation which has cost our country so dear.”

The Prime Minister thanked John for his support but made the case for remaining a full member of the EU – he is sceptical of free trade arrangements like those enjoyed by Switzerland.

John said afterwards:

“I believe we will soon have to make a decision about the nature of our future relationship. The British people are fed up with the EU’s mindless interference, our businesses suffer from the relentless tide of EU regulations, and our taxpayers question the rising cost of membership. We can only postpone this decision for so long.”
